Tommy Bengtsson and I edited a special issue on “Inequality, economic stress, and demographic response” for Explorations in Economic History. With the online publication of our introduction the special issue is now complete. The papers apply methods from the original Eurasia Project comparative volumes to population register databases to examine patterns of demographic responses to social and economic context, thereby providing insight into living standards and inequality in the past. Some of the papers are by authors associated with the original Eurasia Project, making use of expanded databases covering sites in 19th century Japan, China, Italy, Belgium, and Sweden and/or investigating new topics. Other papers are by authors making use of newly constructed population register databases in other locations including Scotland, Hungary, Estonia, and South Africa, but investigating the same basic questions. The papers are revised versions of ones presented in sessions at the 2022 World Economic History Congress in Paris, France.
