We spent the end of December 2019 and beginning of 2020 in Japan. We arrived in Kyoto on New Year’s Eve and spent most of the evening in and around the grounds of the Yasaka Shrine. The original Yasaka Shrine gallery at my website is here.

While sorting my Chicago photographs, I also moved my pictures of the Federal Center Plaza to their own gallery. I especially love the Post Office.

I was organizing photos from our visit to Chicago in November 2019, and took all of my photographs of the Chicago River at night and put them into a dedicated gallery. This includes pictures from a variety of different trips to Chicago.
Kanamaru-za, Kotohira, Kagawa, Japan (金毘羅大芝居 or 金丸座)
While in Kotohira in December 2019, we also visited Kanamaru-za, a famous kabuki theater. Apparently it is one of the oldest in Japan. It is still an operating theater and they will put on performances every year. You can also browse the photos in the Kanamaru-za album at my photography website.
Konpira Shrine, Kotohira, Kagawa, Japan (金刀比羅宮 or 金比羅大権現)
In late December 2019, after spending some time in Takamatsu and Shodoshima, we visited Kotohira before heading to Osaka. While in Kotohira we visited the famous Kotohira Shrine. This was at the top of a hill and required a lot of stairs. It was quite lovely and luckily the weather was very nice. To browse…
Angel Road, Tonosho, Shodoshima, Japan エンジェルロード
While we were in Tonosho, we stayed at a hotel that overlooked the Angel Road. This is a sandbar that connected to some small outlying islands that was passable at low tide but flooded at high tide. It’s a lot of fun to see and quite beautiful. Photos of Angel Road are also available in…
Teshima, Japan 日本豊島
In late December 2019 we also Teshima in Japan. It’s a small island best known for the Teshima Art Museum. This is a spectacular museum and well worth a side trip. It’s pretty special and hard to describe, and as with many museums on Naoshima, no pictures were allowed inside, so the pictures here are…
Naoshima, Japan 日本直島
In December 2019 we spent one day on Naoshima, which is famous for its museums. It was an easy day trip via ferry from Takamatsu. The key parts of the island including the museums were easily seen via a combination of walking and a bus ride. The museums are spectacular but do not allow photography…
University of Illinois Arboretum
Last November we visited Urbana-Champaign. On one cold, grey day we went to the University of Illinois Arboretum. We took pictures of the trees and once again I focused on what I thought were interesting patterns of branches. The full gallery of University of Illinois Arboretum photos is here.
