Ritsurin Garden (栗林公園), Takamatsu (高松), Japan
We spent Christmas break in Japan. We began with a visit to Takamatsu. On our first day we visited the Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu. This is a lovely historic garden. There was a lot to see there and we wish we could have spent more time. The original photos are also available in the Ritsurin…
Scenes from train rides in mainland China
Lately I have been taking the train back and forth to Wuhan and other locations in the mainland on a pretty regular basis. I like taking pictures of the scenery around sunrise and more commonly sunset. I especially like overexposed shots suggestive of a post-apocalyptic landscape. Please visit the full gallery at my photography website.
Forbidden City (故宫 紫禁城) in Beijing
Last year while in Beijing we took a day to visit the Forbidden City. The first time I visited was actually back in 1987, when I was an undergraduate and I spent a summer in Beijing participating in a research project by my advisor. We visited the No. 1 Historical Archives on a regular basis,…
Wuhan High-Speed Rail (HSR) Station 武漢高鐵站
I have been going to Wuhan pretty regularly for the past few years. I like taking pictures at the Wuhan high-speed rail station there because the flooring on the platforms reflects the sun, creating lots of interesting effects. It is sort of how I imagine the way train stations in Raketen-Stadt in Gravity’s Rainbow might…
Intersection and wet market at Ping Shek/Ngau Chi Wan
A month or two ago I ran an errand down at the market at Ngau Chi Wan (buying some dim sum for the following day’s breakfast) and brought along by Canon G5 X Mark II. I’m pretty impressed with what that camera can do. It’s the first pocket camera I have had that I thought…

One of my meetings was at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology and we stayed near the campus of National Taiwan University, so in the evening we walked around the Gongguan 公馆…
Beitou 北投, Taiwan 台湾
In fall 2019 we visited Taipei. I was pretty busy with meetings and only had time to take pictures in the evening after dinner. One evening we went to Beitou and walked around a bit. Beitou is an old hot spring area. I don’t have any pictures of the hot springs but I do have…
Isle of Coll, Scotland
We were recently in Scotland, and we visited the Isle of Coll, off of the west coast. We took the ferry from Oban. The Isle of Coll is relatively small, and less than 200 people live there now. It is a lovely place, and well worth visiting. We uploaded some of our pictures of Coll…
Photos from Kyushu, Japan 日本九州照片
We recently had the opportunity to visit Kyushu. We visited Fukuoka, Yufuin, Kitsuki, and Kurokawa. We also made brief side trips to Aso and Dazaifu. Outside of Fukuoka we mainly stayed in ryokan that served fantastic meals, in many cases in our rooms, so I have an unusually large number of food pictures in each…
